1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL 427 R-Code for sale! Motorcar Classics is proud to present this exceptional 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL Fastback coupe featured in Raven Black with Red interior. This is a rare and authentic R-Code car which refers to the 427CI, 425HP Dual-Quad V8 motor. The 427 R0Code motor was offered as an option in the big Galaxie line to homologate it for NASCAR competition along with the mandatory Toploader 4-Speed gearbox. This icon of early 60s American muscle was meticulously restored by marque expert Don Allen with all Ford NOS stock components. It has covered very few miles since completion. Features on this car include; Correct markings throughout, fully detailed undercarriage, Perma-Tuned transistor ignition, 3.50 rear axle, Bucket seats with center console, Heat & Defrost with instruction tags, Fender skirts, Full-size spinner wheel covers, and Whitewall tires.
In 2008, this virtually flawless 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL R-code received the Antique Automobile Club of Americas Grand National Award scoring 100 of 100 points. This awesome automobile came from the Total Performance Program launched by Ford in 1961 to establish it as a world power in motorsports. In 1963, the ensuing engine development program produced one of the most powerful production engines ever built: the R-code 427 CI FE big-block V-8 first seen in the full-size SportsRoof fastback 1963 Galaxie. Based on the Ford-Edsel (FE) block introduced in 1958, the R-code was specifically designed for homologation in NASCAR and would later see use in Shelbys big-block Cobras and the Ford GT40. Underrated at 425 HP at 6,000 RPM, its reinforced block featured cross-drilled 4-bolt mains and incorporated a forged steel crank and heavy-duty connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, 11.5:1 compression, a high-lift, high-duration solid-lifter camshaft, an aluminum high-rise intake manifold with dual inline Holley carburetors fed by high-flow 3/8-inch fuel lines, Perma-Tuned transistor ignition and thin wall header-style exhaust manifolds. Equipped with the requisite Toploader 4-speed manual transmission and 3.50:1 rear end, the R-code Galaxie 500XL was powerful and luxurious, and almost unbeatable in NASCAR competition, dominating the circuit with Manufacturers Championships in 1963 and 1964. This Don Allen-restored 1964 Galaxie 500XL is an outstanding example of the flagship R-code finished in the correct factory color combination of Raven Black with a contrasting red interior featuring bucket seats, a center console, AM/FM radio and in-dash clock. Completed with white-stripe tires, full-size spinner wheel covers and fender skirts, it shows correct markings throughout and is well detailed, including the undercarriage.
