The Gallardo, widely viewed as one of the sexiest sports cars on the market, is a treat for those who want look-at-me styling and mind-blowing speed. Though it's a true sports car, the Gallardo is intended for everyday driving as well as racing. The model name is taken from a breed of 18th-century fighting bulls. Built with an aluminum body and space frame, the body sits low to the ground and has big side scoops, sharp edges and curves. The cab-forward cockpit is integrated into the body, which features a sharply slanted windshield and what Lamborghini calls "tensed pillars." Cooling inlets dominate the front end, and foldaway mirrors slant forward, the Gallardo has conventional front-hinged doors. Open the door, and the Gallardo welcomes you with its handsome interior furnished in rich leather, The 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo's snug interior is surprisingly comfortable and luxurious. Fit and finish are beautiful, with a handmade feel to the many yards of leather. As for the Gallardo's controls it's a true driver's car -- with everything situated for the optimal driving experience.
Gallardos are powered by a 5.0-liter V-10 that has four valves per cylinder. The V-10 generates 520 hp and 376 pounds-feet of torque. The six-speed gearbox can operate with "E-gear" paddle shifters. According to Lamborghini, the coupe can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 4 seconds. The all-wheel-drive system normally operates with 30 percent of output at the front and 70 percent at the rear, but it can adjust the distribution as needed. Once all four tires grab the asphalt, the Gallardo explodes forward with a ferocious growl. The deep-throated rumble through the exhaust is accompanied by hisses from the thirsty V-10 gulping as much fresh air as possible through the air intakes just over your shoulders. An electronically controlled spoiler is fitted at the rear.
With permanent all-wheel drive and a 42/58 (front/rear) weight distribution, which Lamborghini says is optimal for traction, braking and handling. The Gallardo is a study in handling and agility. It features an aluminum space frame with aluminum double wishbone front and rear suspensions and, to further aid handling, the Gallardo gets a full Electronic Stability Program. Ventilated Brembo anti-lock disc brakes come with power vacuum, aluminum alloy calipers -- with eight pistons in the front and four in the rear.
